How to Smoke Hookah

A hookah is a smoking device, also commonly known as a waterpipe, which is thought to have originated in India. Hookahs are most often used to smoke a particular tobacco, called shisha. It was originally believed that, because the smoke was passed through water, it was purer and therefore healthier. Historically, the hookah was a representation of wealth or aristocracy, making it a type of status symbol. In more modern times, a hookah is often used in a social setting. Several friends may get together to smoke a hookah at home or in a special hookah bar.

  1. First: Add water

Before smoking, you must properly prepare the hookah. Add water to the base of the hookah in the jar. Keep the level shallow to increase the ease of smoking.

  2. Second: Add tobacco

Load the tobacco or shisha into the bowl of the hookah. This bowl is located at the top. Position the screen over the tobacco bowl. This screen is either a piece of pierced metal or foil. The screen holds the hot charcoal and separates the coal from the tobacco.

  3. Third: Light the charcoal

Light the charcoal by holding it over a flame. Hold the charcoal carefully with a pair of tongs. The charcoal is ready when it is glowing red. Place it on the charcoal screen over the bowl.

  4. Fourth: Position the windscreen

Place the windscreen over the bowl. This creates a safer and more controlled burning environment.

  5. Fifth: Smoke the hookah

Place the mouthpiece of the hose against your open lips and slowly inhale. As you inhale, air is drawn in, creating smoke. The smoke passes through the water and is cooled before you inhale it.
